Our campuses are located in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory, all hosting extraordinary facilities that help support our teaching, learning and research. To reach our below zero targets, our primary focus is on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions through decarbonising these campuses.

We are primarily reducing our energy emissions by transitioning from natural gas to renewable electricity and investigating ways to self-generate renewable electricity on our campuses. We will also be working to transition our vehicle fleet to electric vehicles (EVs).

An update (PDF, 316 KB) on our energy use for the 2022-2023 financial year is available.

Several projects are underway to help us achieve our aims.

National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) Waste Heat Capture – Pipe Installation

During planned upgrades to the NCI, we will be adding water-to-water heat exchangers and pipework to allow a future thermal energy plant to use this free heating source.

Gas boiler replacement program

We have a program of work to replace gas powered heating systems with electric heat pumps. These electric substitutions will dramatically reduce the GHG emissions for these selected buildings.

To date (August 2023), four buildings on our Acton campus have been transitioned to electric heat pumps and three more buildings will be transitioned away from gas this summer, to be operational by winter 2024. Read the latest update on our transition from gas.
