The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Seventeen SDGs were adopted as a universal call for urgent action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The ANU SDG Community of Practice (CoP) was established to connect members of the ANU community who are working on research, teaching and initiatives directly and indirectly related to the SDGs. The CoP aims to facilitate greater visibility of the SDGs and collaboration in research and practical initiatives across the University and provide a platform for staff and HDR students to form new connections, collaborate, share their work, and facilitate opportunities for partnerships with industry and governments.

Objectives:

• To facilitate the exchange of ideas and best practices for incorporating SDGs into academic curriculum.
• To explore opportunities for integrating sustainable practices into the daily operations of ANU.
• To identify and foster potential research projects and collaborations aligned with the SDGs.
• To advocate and encourage reporting on all SDGs for all ANU activities (strategic, operational, education, research, practitioner, engagement, partnerships, science communication, research impact) as both a primary focus and outcome(s); providing an evidence base to inform prospective activities.
• To facilitate SDG-based initiatives in and around Canberra, and position ANU as an SDG think tank by connecting the interested parties.

The SDG CoP is open to all ANU staff and HDR students interested in sustainable development. Meetings are held monthly, and all members are encouraged to participate in discussions, share insights, and contribute to achieving CoP objectives.
