Australasian
Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS)
ANU is a member of the Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS), a member-led organisation supporting sustainable action on university campuses. Through ACTS, ANU connects with peers across the region, contributing to sector-wide initiatives and sharing practical approaches to embedding environmental sustainability into campus operations.
Climate Action in Government Operations (CAiGO) Community of Practice
ANU shares knowledge with other Commonwealth entities via the Climate Action in Government Operations Community of practice, administered by the Department of Finance. ANU staff attend and contribute to webinars on diverse aspects of climate action, sharing insights about our decarbonisation journey and learning from peers working to manage climate risks in complex operational environments.
Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA)
The GBCA supports best practice in the design, construction and operation of sustainable buildings and campus spaces. GBCA leads the transition to a more sustainable property industry through education, collaboration and advocacy. Through GBCA’s Green Star rating system and principles, the University aligns campus projects with best practice benchmarks for climate risk, energy efficiency, emissions reduction, water use, materials and occupant wellbeing. Our engagement with GBCA supports efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of our built environment, improve building performance and create healthier, more resilient spaces for our community.
Group of Eight (Go8) Sustainability Forum
ANU currently chairs the Go8 Sustainability Forum, established in 2009 to strengthen communication, collaboration and leadership on environmental sustainability across Australia’s leading research-intensive universities. The Forum focuses on sustainability issues related to university operations, governance and impact. Through the Forum, universities share knowledge and best practice, align approaches and collectively address sustainability challenges and opportunities.
Tertiary Education Facilities Management Association (TEFMA)
ANU engages with TEFMA to support sustainable planning, delivery and management of the University’s built environment. Through TEFMA, the University connects with facilities and infrastructure colleagues across the higher education sector to share knowledge, data and best practice. TEFMA provides a valuable forum for collaboration on issues central to our sustainability goals, helping inform our approach to managing complex infrastructure to reduce our environmental impact while supporting high-quality learning and research environments.
International
Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC)
ANU is a founding member of the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC), with our Vice-Chancellor serving on its Board. GAUC focuses on advancing climate change solutions through research, education and public outreach and partners with industry, non-profit and government organisations to promote implementation of solutions on a global scale.
International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Sustainable Campus Initiative

IARU focuses on addressing major global challenges, enhancing opportunities for students and staff, and promoting collaborative work. As part of this alliance, the University participates in collaborative projects focused on environmental sustainability, aiming to develop sustainable innovative solutions to address climate challenges.
Race to Zero
ANU joined Race to Zero in 2021, a global coalition of non-state actors working to halve global emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. As a signatory of this coalition, the University has committed to reducing its emissions across all scopes and publishing action plans and annual status reports.
U7+ Alliance – Climate Change & Sustainability Working Group
ANU is a member of the U7+ Alliance, an alliance of university leaders aiming to address global challenges. U7+ coordinates with government leaders in G7 countries to address these challenges. Through U7+, the University contributes research and teaching insights and practical experience to advance climate and sustainability solutions.
