Transport is part of everything we do as staff and students, it includes University travel, our vehicle fleet, daily commuting and student travel to get to our campuses.
Not only it contributes to climate change as one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions at ANU, it is also affected by it, already influencing how and when people travel, with extreme weather, heat and air quality affecting safety and reliability. We are planning for safer, more resilient and lower carbon mobility through coordinated initiatives, operational improvements and behaviour change programs to make more sustainable transport the easiest and most practical choice for our community.
See key highlights from our transport work below or explore our progress in our various reports and publications.
Our approach
We are encouraging a shift toward active and low emission transport while improving accessibility and efficiency of campus travel. This includes expanding electric-vehicle infrastructure, promoting active travel, improving fleet sustainability and enhancing travel decision-making through better systems and planning.
Key focus areas include:
- Reducing emissions from the University fleet by implementing more efficient fleet management and transitioning to electric vehicles.
- Expanding electric vehicle charging options to support electrification of the fleet and low carbon commuting for the ANU community.
- Supporting active and shared transport to make walking, cycling and public transport more convenient travel choices for staff and students, including via a campus bus loop.
- Encouraging low carbon travel behaviour through programs, systems and capacity building.
Our goal
Enable our community to be successful with a lower greenhouse gas footprint from University travel, commuting and fleet operations.
Our targets
- Reduce emissions from University travel by 10% (2024 baseline)*.
- Reduce emissions from staff and student daily commuting by 25% by the end of 2030 (2024 baseline)**.
- Increase percentage of non-ACT-based students using lower carbon transport to move to ANU.
- Reduce emissions from University fleet by 90% by 2030 (2019 base year).
These targets are supported by improvements to travel systems and policy, expanded infrastructure, behaviour change initiatives, and collaboration across the University and sector.
* This target builds on the 38.5% reduction achieved by the university in 2025, in relation to 2019.
** An aspirational target has been set for commuting to inspire community action.
Our progress
By the end of 2025, University travel emissions were thirty-eight point five per cent (38.5%) below 2019 baseline levels. This reflects sustained efforts across policy, systems, data improvement and behaviour change initiatives. We have also strengthened our emissions tracking and transparency, expanding the sources included in our travel inventory, updating guidance for staff and students and implementing a new travel management system in 2025. These measures support more informed decision-making and help embed lower carbon travel practices across the University.
We are progressing the transition of the University fleet toward electric vehicles, supported by a EV fleet implementation strategy and the continued rollout of publicly accessible fast-charging infrastructure in three locations across campus (Fulton Muir,School of Art and Design and Geology Close car park). Check PlugShare.com for more information on these locations.
Work continues to reduce emissions from University travel, commuting and fleet operations through coordinated institutional initiatives and community action. Our progress is reviewed regularly and published through various through the reports and publications.
