Plastic Free July is a global movement helping millions reduce plastic waste. At ANU, we are committed to reducing waste at its source and minimising the amount sent to landfill. As part of Plastic Free July, we are highlighting simple, everyday actions that help reduce plastic and lighten your environmental footprint, both on and off campus.
Small changes create a big impact. Whether you're a seasoned reuser or just starting your plastic-free journey, here are some simple tips to get involved this July and build habits that last.
Top tips to reduce plastic waste from your daily life
Go reusable, not disposable
- Bring or borrow a reusable coffee cup for your daily drinks. Most coffee cups and lids are not recyclable in the ACT.
- Keep a set of cutlery, a straw and a container in your backpack, office or shared kitchen so you’re always prepared.
- Bring your own reusable water bottle. You can fill up for free at water stations across campus or in local kitchenettes.
- If you can’t avoid buying drinks in bottles, choose a 10c refundable container. Drop it in a designated 10c Refundable bin or use our Container Deposit Scheme point on the ground floor of Marie Reay as part of the new campus-wide waste system.
- Use beeswax wraps or reusable containers instead of cling film.
Shop smart
- Buy in bulk at places like the Canberra Food Co-Op to reduce packaging.
- Choose loose produce over pre-packaged items.
- Carry reusable containers and bags to avoid single-use options.
- Support local stores that let you bring your own container.
Rethink your bathroom and cleaning
- Try bar soap, shampoo bars or refillable options from bulk stores.
- Look for non-plastic alternatives to your usual bathroom products.
- Make your own cleaning products using simple ingredients like vinegar and bicarb.
Avoid plastic and compost in your kitchen
- Swap to loose-leaf tea and coffee grounds instead of teabags and pods. You can compost both in the food organics bins on campus.
Get active and social
- Organise a clean-up in your local area or join a group that's already doing one.
- Keep the conversation going with friends and colleagues. Share tips, swaps and small wins to inspire others.
If using plastic is unavoidable, try to repurpose the item to extend its life. When it can no longer be used, dispose of it properly to avoid contaminating recyclable streams. Our Be Bin Smart Guide can help you sort waste correctly.
