Recently, ANU Chief Information Officer, Paul Hargreaves, shared that ANU has engaged with WV Technologies to offer secure IT disposal and e-waste recycling. WV Technologies is a local social enterprise that securely disposes of data and IT assets, in an eco-friendly and socially responsible way.
They will accept all asset-tagged laptops, tablets, mobile phones, desktop computers, monitors, docking stations, copiers, printers, servers, external hard drives and all associated cables and power supplies.
Why this is important
Using a certified and experienced provider for IT equipment disposal ensures that all devices are properly recorded, disconnected from ANU systems and data is securely wiped to prevent breaches. Improper disposal methods, such as giving equipment directly to staff or using informal channels, pose risks including potential licensing costs, liability issues and data leaks.
WV Technologies prioritises reuse and recycling to minimise landfill waste. Improper disposal often results in technology ending up in landfill. ANU is committed to sustainability and prioritises reuse and recycling wherever possible.
Please arrange for the safe and responsible disposal of ANU technology, by submitting a request through the ANU Service Desk: Request Hardware Disposal.
Key points to remember
- This service should be used for any ANU owned equipment that could contain data, such as desktop computers, laptops, tablets and phones. These assets will usually (but not always) have an ANU Asset tag - a white barcode sticker with 6 digits across the bottom and ‘The Australian National University’ written across the top.
- Other bulky items should also be recycled or disposed via this service, such as monitors, docking stations and printers.
- Broken equipment, which does not store data or have an asset tag, can be disposed of via e-waste bins located across the ANU campus. Email the Campus Support Team to find out where on campus you can recycle non-asset-tagged items and equipment.
- Individual arrangements for disposing of equipment (such as gifting or selling to staff) should not be entered into as they create risk around conflict of interest, data security, licensing and, in some cases, FBT implications for ANU and the staff member.
For more about specialised recycling see the ‘Circular Economy – Recycling and waste management’ section on the Building Operations page.
You can submit a ‘Request Hardware Disposal’ through the ANU Service Desk.
