At ANU we are working to support more flexible and sustainable ways to travel to campus. Across our community, staff and students are finding small, practical ways that help reduce costs and reliance on petrol and diesel, build movement into their day and support wellbeing, often by adjusting just one part of their routine.
Explore how others in our community are already making small changes, and find more advice in our Carbon Smart Commuting Guide.
Plan and implement one small change
Start by choosing one commute, or part of one, each week to swap to active travel or public transport. Focus on simple, convenient changes that are easy to maintain.
Live within 10km of campus?
Active travel is often the quickest and easiest option.
“I hadn't been on a bike properly in years, and getting back to it felt like a big deal at first. But once I started, it came back quickly, and now I just enjoy the ride. Dealing with a bit of rain or a mechanical issue has really increased my confidence. For me, cycling to ANU is about 15km each way and I feel physically and mentally so much better. I have more energy, a clearer head, and less of an afternoon slump. It's become a proper part of my routine now and a positive change to my life overall.” - Julie
Choose one day a week to try something different
Take the light rail, a Transport Canberra bus, or connect with others through our ‘Connect and Commute’ channels in the ANU Green Network to find a carpooling buddy (available to staff and students).
“I ride my bike most days when I go to work, its 18km each way, so about 36km a day. I got started by just doing it, my car was damaged in the 2020 hailstorm and I have rode ever since. To say I save money is an understatement, I save time too as I no longer need to go out of my way to exercise. The money I saved meant I could buy a really nice bike instead of petrol, and I still do it day after day. I honestly love it the most in the rain!” - Leela
Pick your route
Planning ahead can make trying something new feel easier. Use the Transport Canberra Journey Planner or ACT walking and cycling maps to help plan your trip.
You can also combine modes of transport such as public transport with walking and cycling to build a routine that works for you.
““I walk, run or cycle to work every day I come to the office on campus. It's a win win win situation - great for physical and mental health (and no extra time needed at the gym), saves money, and saves time and resources” - Alida
Connect with our campus bus service
The ANU-Civic Loop Bus makes it easier to connect between public transport services in Civic and campus. You can hop on board at Rimmer Street and Alinga Street.
Make the most of campus facilities
Support your active commute by using on-campus facilities, including bike shelters, showers and lockers. These can make active travel or mixed-mode commuting more practical and comfortable. See this map to find your nearest location.
“I realise I'm lucky living relatively close to ANU campus, but often (maybe 1-2 times a week) I'll add in a scenic detour on my walk to work... be 1-2 times a week) I'll add in a scenic detour on my walk to work by climbing up Mt Ainslie or Black Mountain... I shower at work (and have a cache of work clothes to change into).” - Alida
Enjoy your journey
Changing how you travel can also change how you use your time. Public transport or carpooling can create space to read, listen or switch off, while walking and cycling build movement naturally into your day.
“I ride to work every day. My route is between 15 – 20k round trip depending on which way I go, and I appreciate the experience of really being in the place I am. Seeing, hearing, smelling the environment – rather than watching it pass by a window. This time of year is a favourite of mine as each day you see incremental autumn changes. I also love riding to work on sub-zero winter days. Fields of frost light up and sparkle as the sun rises.” - Tom
“Cycling in the rain is so fun! Refreshing, and makes you feel like you're ALIVE!... I'm averaging completing 4 audiobooks a month, while active travel commuting to and from work. The benefits are endless for active travel.”- Alida
"The first morning I was to get back on my bike for commuting during the Cycle Smart pilot, it was pouring rain and I had a flat tire. With a little help and motivation from friends, I decided to cycle in anyways. We passed so many other people who were also braving the elements on foot or bike and it made me feel proud to be part of such a dedicated community. Riding home in the sunshine made me even more grateful for being able to enjoy the outdoors while commuting!" - Ewelina
“Grab some open ear headphones, listen to an audio book or podcast and just pedal after a while you are not even aware of the legs moving, the bikes just moving and you are on autopilot enjoying the ride.” - Leela
Considering e-bikes and vehicles?
If you're looking to make a shift towards using electric vehicles and bikes, explore options such as the University’s novated lease and salary sacrifice arrangements for low-emissions vehicles.
In 2025, almost 55,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent were emitted from commuting to campus in 2025, with petrol cars the most popular mode of transport (ANU commuting and working from home survey report 2025). Choosing a lower-emissions way to travel, even once a week, can help reduce this impact.
