Meet ANU Green at the Sustainable Commuting Fair

ANU Green will be at Kambri on Wednesday 25 February, 11am–1pm for the Sustainable Commuting Fair. Come and talk with us about practical ways to support your health, save money and reduce the impact of your daily commute, including learning more about the Cycle Smart program below.

Cycle Smart: Confident commuter program

2 March – 11 May 2026

Cycle Smart is a 10-week supported cycling-to-work program for ANU staff, designed to help you build confidence, skills and routine in a friendly and supportive environment.

Feel great riding to work — with a little support along the way

Thinking about cycling to work, but not quite sure where to start?

The Cycle Smart program is here to help you build skills, confidence and routine, all in a friendly and supportive environment. This 10-week pilot program is designed especially for ANU staff, addressing real challenges staff have told us they face when cycling to ANU. The program will support you to build your confidence, address safety concerns, develop your route knowledge and build basic maintenance skills.

Why join?

Cycle Smart is about making your commute work better for you by supporting your health, confidence and everyday wellbeing, while helping you save money over time.

Choosing active travel also reduces emissions and congestion, delivering broader benefits for the campus and community.

What to expect

Starting on 2 March, over ten weeks you will get access to guided rides, free workshops, optional fitness sessions and basic bike maintenance support, all designed to help you feel more confident and capable on two wheels.

Your minimum commitment

We know you are busy, that is why we have kept the essential commitment simple and achievable:

  • Join Pedal Power ACT for $12.59 per month (3-month minimum)
Pedal Power membership provides comprehensive cycling insurance, and you will also be supporting the advocacy work they do for cyclists in the ACT.
  • Join one guided ride each week to ANU, with a discounted coffee (or hot drink) at the end
These rides help you build confidence in real-world conditions with support from experienced leaders.
  • Attend four free workshops over the ten-week period
Topics range from basic maintenance, tips and tricks for a smooth commute and route planning.
  • Complete a short weekly check-in survey
These quick reflections help track your progress and support program evaluation.

That’s it - approximately 1–2 hours per week.

Who can participate?

Any ANU staff member with access to a roadworthy bike is welcome to join.

Places are capped at 20 participants to keep the experience supportive and personalised.

ANU is working to reduce our environmental impact across all our emission sources including energy, travel, waste and more. Looking for other ways to help support this mission? Join the ANU Green Network. The Network is an online resource for ANU staff and students to access and share sustainability activities and advice at the University.
