We are taking the next step in making recycling accessible, simple and effective with the rollout of the Be Bin Smart Program. Following a successful pilot earlier this year, ANU Sport is the next location to receive the new bins. With hundreds of staff, students and visitors using the facilities each week, it's an ideal place to showcase the system in action.
The pilot at the Marie Reay Teaching Centre showed that clearer bin labels make it easier for our community to sort their waste - reducing contamination, improving recovery of recyclable materials and keeping more out of landfill. It also sparked strong community engagement through activities at Market Day and O-Week, alongside ongoing observations and surveys that have shaped the program and toolkit now being rolled out.
After ANU Sport, the Program will continue across campus, with Chifley Library next on the list. Keep an eye out over the coming months as the new bins appear in more of your regular spaces.
Be Bin Smart Toolkit
To support the rollout, ANU Green has developed the Be Bin Smart Toolkit, a practical resource designed to make waste sorting clear, consistent and easy to share across campus.
Inside the toolkit, you will find:
- Simple guides to each bin stream, explaining what goes where.
- Bin Appétit, our character-led campaign, making waste education fun and memorable.
- Myth-busting content to tackle common recycling mistakes and misconceptions.
- Downloadable posters and signage to use in your own spaces.
While it will take time for the new bins to appear everywhere, the toolkit means you can start your Bin Smart journey right now by learning the streams, putting the tips into practice and feeling confident about what goes where.
Get Involved
Everyone at ANU can play a part in the Be Bin Smart Program and help make recycling simpler across campus. Here's how you can get started:
- Explore the Be Bin Smart Toolkit: Check out guides, myth-busters, posters and digital materials to start learning and sharing with your peers.
- Join the ANU Green Network on MS Teams: Connect with fellow staff and students, follow the rollout and share your ideas or feedback.
- Take action in your own spaces: Put up posters, use the resources and help reduce confusion about what goes where.
Every action counts! By getting involved, you're helping to build a campus where recycling is accessible, simple and effective, making a real difference in reducing landfill and improving resource recovery across the University.
