ANU has signed the Nature Positive Pledge, joining the Nature Positive Universities Network (NPUN).

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme and the University of Oxford in partnership with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the alliance brings together universities worldwide to drive collective action for nature across campuses, operations and supply chains.

ANU is committed to understanding and reducing our impacts on nature. As part of the Nature Positive Pledge, we are conducting a biodiversity baseline assessment of our campuses. To guide this work, we are establishing an advisory group bringing together ANU experts, professional staff and students. This will inform the development of biodiversity targets and action plans suited to the ANU context. Progress towards these targets will be reported annually in the ANU Environmental Sustainability Report.

“Our campuses are home to remarkable biodiversity. Joining this network gives us a framework to understand what we have, set meaningful targets, and connect our researchers, operational teams and students around a shared goal for the landscapes we all inhabit.” - Clare de Castella, Associate Director, Environmental Sustainability.

This work reflects the University’s broader approach to environmental sustainability and recognises the important role universities play in responding to the global biodiversity crisis. Protecting and restoring nature is critical to supporting healthy ecosystems, resilient communities and long-term environmental outcomes.

Joining NPUN and implementing its framework is part of our Nature Conservation goals in the ANU Environmental Sustainability Plan 2026-2030, aligning with our priorities to:

  • Enhance landscape resilience and expand, support and connect areas of biodiversity value, including ecosystems of high ecological integrity
  • Maintain the area of green space across Acton campus

ANU is working to reduce our environmental impact across all our emission sources including energy, travel, waste and more. Looking for other ways to help support this mission? Join the ANU Green Network. The Network is an online resource for ANU staff and students to access and share sustainability activities and advice at the University.
